H1. In the table below, the total dollar amount awarded in the 2003-04 academic year to full-time and part-time degree-seeking undergraduates (using the same cohort reported in CDS Question B1, “total degree-seeking” undergraduates) is pro-rated for each of several categories of students. Included is aid awarded to international students (i.e., those not qualifying for federal aid.) Separately listed is all non-need-based athletically-related aid or tuition waivers that are personnel benefits. In the table, “U” denotes the total number of degree-seeking undergraduates who were awarded aid. “F” denotes the number of degree-seeking, first-time, first-year (freshman) students who were awarded aid. First-year students are included in the total undergraduate count. Students may be counted in more than one row. Aid that is not-need-based but is used to meet need is counted as need-based aid. Data is reported for the 2003-04 academic year.
Note: Some observers, analysts, and critics often make a simple calculation on the above dollar amounts and numbers of recipients in order to calculate an average grant award, average loan, etc., made to undergraduates. A risk is that aggregating data at such a level of abstraction may mask important differences and variations. Number of Enrolled Students Receiving Aid, Fall 1997 H3. The number of degree-seeking students who applied for and received financial aid is listed below. Note: In the chart, students may be counted in more than one row and full-time freshman are also counted as full-time undergraduates.
