"Common Data Set"

This report includes institutional data compiled in response to questions developed by a national consensus of publishers including the College Board, Wintergreen/Orchard House, Peterson's, and U.S. News & World Report.  To their original items have been added further materials in response to the most frequently asked questions [FAQ].  The report is updated annually late in the fall and contains most information commonly required for publishers of reference-type works or for the general public.

The report Savannah State University Common Data Set is a composite “snap shot” of dynamic institutional operations depending largely upon fall semester “census” reports widely used for depicting university affairs in professional circles.  It is developed in response to inquiries commonly received from external stakeholders with varying interests in the University.  The report is intended to supply adequate, timely and accurate aggregate systemic and long-term information about a public institution without subjecting the institution to unreasonable costs arising from conducting independent ad-hoc research projects or from completing diverse forms and surveys planned and generated by legions of individual external inquirers.  The report itself closely follows the general format and numbering agreed to by a variety of organizations, including the College Board, Wintergreen/Orchard House, Peterson’s, and U.S. News and many leading colleges.  It will be expanded from time to time as further data elements and perspectives on University operations are found to be in general, widespread, or common demand.  The report is continuously updated as new findings allow and thus represents a dynamic document.  Accordingly, a previous year’s data is reflected until a new years’ data has been researched and calculated.  Attention to dates is therefore critical when reviewing the document.

Additional information and data relating to University operations also may be found located on the University’s web site and an expanded Savannah State University Fact Book that may be accessed there (see below for address).  Still further information of a comparative nature about the 34 public institutions comprising the University System of Georgia may be found conveniently located at a separate state web site to which interested persons are referred (see below for address).  Finally, another collection of information is available via the United States Department of Education's web site (see below for address).  Readers are cautioned, however, that many terms and calculations reflected by data displayed in this report and at these web sites are highly technical in nature and may not actually reflect what their face impressions may suggest at first glance.  Care should be exercised by responsible and thoughtful readers in making claims or assertions about “facts” that are not warranted by the algorithms from which they are calculated.

Concerns or questions about this report or about further ad-hoc research projects into University affairs should be addressed to Savannah State University’s office of Institutional Research and Planning.  Inquiries about particular current issues and developments for this University should be addressed either to the appropriate University administrative officer or to the Office of Communications/Public Information indicated in section A2.
