*  Experience suggests that the most difficult aspect of strategic planning may be developing a viable and meaningful "mission" statement that provides guidance for daily activity.  Sometimes, an institution's overall mission is co-opted by a sub-unit in the grip of hyperbole.  Sometimes, statement crafters carried away by jargon assert meaningless platitudes.  Useful mission statements emphasize the unit's core competence and discriminate clearly between the role of the unit and others in the organization.  They are brief enough that everyone in the unit can remember accurately what they are; they could be carved over the office door and read without breaking stride down the hall.  (Here, as elsewhere in organizational life: the KISS principle prevails.)
