SECTION I: PRINCIPLES AND PHILOSOPHY OF ACCREDITATION
1.1 INSTITUTION COMMITMENT AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a member of
the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Savannah State College is committed to
participation in the activities and decisions of the Commission on Colleges. The College
reports all existing and planned activities according to the policies, procedures, and
guidelines of the Commission. The College insures integrity in all of its operations in
dealing with its constituencies, in its relations with other member institutions, and in
its accreditation activities.
1.2 APPLICATION ON THE CRITERIA
Subsection 1.2
does not apply to Savannah State College.
1.3 CONDITIONS OF ELIGIBILITY
The College has
attested in writing to its commitment and intent to comply with the Criteria, either
current or as hereafter modified, consistent with the policies and procedures of the
Commission on Colleges. This letter is on file in the office of the Commission on
Colleges. That same letter attested to the College's understanding and agreement that the
Commission on Colleges may, at its discretion, make known to any agency or member of the
public (who may request such information) the nature of any action, positive or negative,
regarding status with the Commission.
The College has
agreed to disclose to the Commission on Colleges any and all such information as the
Commission may require to carry out its evaluating and accrediting function.
The College is
a unit of the University System of Georgia and is authorized by the Board of Regents of
the University System to award degrees, certificates, and diplomas.
The Board of
Regents of the University System, the College's governing body, consists of fifteen
members and has the authority to carry out the mission of the institution. None of the
voting members has any contractual, employment, familial or personal financial interest in
the institution.
The Chief
Executive Officer of the College is the President.
Savannah State
College, in continuous operation since 1890, offers degree programs based on at least two
academic years at the associate level, at least four academic years at the baccalaureate
level, or at least one academic year at the post-baccalaureate level.
The College has
a clearly defined and published statement of purpose. Its published admission policies are
compatible with the stated purpose.
All
undergraduate degree programs include a substantial component of liberal arts or general
education courses at the post-secondary level. For degree completion in associate and
baccalaureate programs, the College requires students to take courses in the Core
Curriculum, which consists of four components and includes 20 quarter hours in humanities,
20 quarter hours in mathematics and natural sciences, 20 hours in social sciences, and 30
hours in courses appropriate to the major. These requirements exceed the required minimum
of 15 semester hours or the equivalent quarter hours. The credit hours in the Core
Curriculum are required in all degree programs.
In each
curricular area in which a major is offered, there is at least one fulltime faculty
member with responsibility for oversight and coordination of that area.
The College has
a plan, as well as a planning and evaluation process, which addresses its educational,
physical, and financial growth.
The College
owns sufficient learning resources and provides all those services required to support the
courses, programs, and degrees offered.
The College has
established an adequate financial base and has available an audited financial statement
made within the year prior to the visit of the committee which will review the Self-Study.
The College does not have a cumulative operating deficit; state regulations do not permit
such a deficit.

CLASSIFICATION OF INSTITUTION
Savannah State
College is a Level III institution, offering the Associate of Science, the Bachelor of
Business Administration, the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of
Social Work, and in affiliation with Georgia Southern University, the Master of Business
Administration, the Master of Public Administration and the Master of Social Work.
