INTRODUCTION
The purpose of
the Self-Study is the improvement of Savannah State College. This study has resulted in a
report, which will be reviewed by a visiting committee for the affirmation of the
College's accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. However, its
larger purpose is to maintain and improve institutional effectiveness and to provide a
means to demonstrate that effectiveness. The Self-Study is comprehensive and examines
every aspect of the College's program and activities.
This Self-Study
determines the extent to which the college meets or exceeds accreditation criteria,
identifies strengths and weaknesses, and formulates recommendations and suggestions for
improvements and additions to the existing programs and activities. By involving all
elements of the college, the Self-Study should develop a greater sense of cohesiveness
among faculty, administration, staff, and students
A major part of
the Self-Study evaluates how well the college is fulfilling its Statement of Purpose and
whether the goals and objectives are consistent with that Statement. Consequently, the
Self-Study begins with a thorough review of the existing Statement of Purpose.
The academic
units of the college have undertaken separate self-studies in order to gain insights into
their work and effectiveness. The reports of these unit self-studies are available in
the exhibit room during the visitation or otherwise in the Academic Vice resident's
office.
The Savannah
State College Self-Study planning framework was initiated when Dr. Wiley S. Bolden, Acting
President, assumed the acting presidency of the College on February 1, 1988 and appointed
Dr. Steven R. Smith as Director of the Self-Study and Dr. Charles J. Elmore as Chairman of
the Steering Committee. The remaining members of the Steering Committee were appointed
