Campus Radio Station

Planning unit: Office of Academic Affairs

Person responsible: Radio Station Manager

Planning Objective: Currently the radio station is right on target with the training, educational and Public Service aspects of our programs. There are however some problem areas.

Action Plans

FY 1998:

Construction of the Radio Station's Antenna tower is still being delayed

The remote broadcast unit is inoperable

The Newsroom is not being used because it remains unfinished.

Production of daily 15 minute news program to include on site broadcast of breaking stories. Broadcasting Home and away SSU football games and home basketball games. This will provide our students with hands on training in News and Sports broadcasting.

Resources Needed: Will not require any new resources.

FY 1999-2001:

· Institution of fund raising program which will allow us to compensate student workers and augment the station's operating budget.

· Expansion of News broadcast and training programs.

Public School Partnerships

Planning Unit: Vice President for Academic Affairs and Interagency Council

Responsible for Implementation: Vice President for Academic Affairs

Relates to University Goal: 11

Planning Objective: To continue the development and enhancement of university/school partnership activities that serve to encourage students in the Savannah-Chatham public schools to complete secondary school and enroll in a post-secondary school program.

Action Plans

FY 1998:

· The Student Mentoring Program will include fifty-one fourth graders enrolled in the Heritage Immersion Program. Fifty-one SSC students enrolled in the NROTC and ROTC programs will serve as mentors.

· The University will work with the Savannah Housing Authority to plan a summer camp on the campus for the summer of 1995 which will enroll fifty elementary school students. These plans will be completed by July, 1994.

FY 1999:

Implement the public housing summer camp for fifty students by June, 1999.

The mentoring program will be expanded to include twenty-five middle school students.

The Interagency Council will explore the possibilities for centralizing all University/School partnership activities under the Interagency Council.

A partnership brochure will be developed to describe all partnership activities by May, 1999.

The Interagency Council will identify potential funding sources for the partnership program including the University (private funds), the Savannah Chatham Schools, the Youth Futures Authority and the Savannah Housing Authority.

FY 2000:

· Continue and expand the mentoring program.

· Implementation of centralized administrative control of all University/school partnerships.

· Continuation and expansion of the summer camp.

Prep Program

Planning Unit: Office of Academic Affairs

Person Responsible: Director of TRIO, Doretha Tyson

Planning Objective: The Postsecondary Readiness Enrichment Program is an initiative of Ile University System of Georgia's Board of Regents. It is a year-round academic support program for middle schooners (7 & 8th grade) and provides exposure to the campuses of public colleges, universities and technical institutes. PREP is implemented in collaboration with Armstrong Atlantic State University and Coastal Georgia Conununity College and was funded to serve EM middle school students in Chatham and Bryan Counties. To date, M PREP students have been identified and are receiving services which includes tutoring and monthly readiness sessions on the campuses of Savannah State- University and Armstrong Atlantic State University.

The aforementioned projected outcomes will be implemented through an intense PREP curriculum which includes acaden-dc readiness skills, tutoring/homework assistance, problem solving skills, mentoring/leadership development, cultural enrichment, recreational activities, conflict resolution, technological skills and conu-nunity service.
