Display 1170: Peer, Aspirational, & Proximate Institutions*

For planning purposes, "peer" institutions are those judged to be quite similar, at present, in terms of general attributes, including history, mission, size, context, and governance.  For SSU "peers" do not include special purpose, religious, private for-profits, primarily elite-serving, expensive, 2-year, major research, or non-Southern institutions.  For the most part, they are state operated.

"Aspirational" institutions are those that have been formally identified as having certain enviable practices or outcomes such that SSU may wish to emulate them or some of their practices in the future.

"Proximate" institutions are those in the immediate Chatham County geographical region--competitors to and from which SSU students often or sometimes transfer.

(This set of "peer" and "aspiration" institutions was formally adopted for the University on 2/11/05 by Presidential action. The list of "proximate" institutions as been added here for comparative purposes. )

**  "Unit ID" is a unique number developed and assigned to educational institutions by the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Educational Statistics for use with the Education Deparatment's IPEDS Reports.  The number is especially valuable for accessing comparative institutional information on line through the IPEDS Peer Analysis System located at http://nces.ed.gov/ipedspas/  Users can enter the Unit IDs for any group of institutions of interest and develop tabular reports for any set of data collected by IPEDS across this select group of institutions.  (To do so, go to the referenced URL and "enter" through the "Institutional Level" access following the clear instructions.  Both the User ID and Password to use are an institution's Unit ID #.)
