SSU IRP undertook to study (Spring, 1998) how extensively instructional
space was used on campus during the prior fall semester. Findings were presented to
an administrative retreat during the summer, 1998, to the Presidents' Cabinet, and to the
faculty in-service training in September. Displayed here are key slides from that
power point presentation. For this study, all instructional spaces on campus were
inventoried by the Facilities staff who counted available seats and calculated available
square feet. Occupancy data was obtained from the Registrar's official fall schedule
of classes. IRP staff verified the room count, but not square footage or available
seatcount.
It was found that most rooms were not scheduled to be used for most of the available
hours during the week and when rooms were being used, they were generally not filled to
capacity. Fully 9% of the class sections were scheduled in rooms in conflict with
other sections. (This was the condition of the official schedule in the Spring following
the conclusion of the term under study, indicating that the schedule had not been
officially rectified during the term in which the conflicts had occurred.)
It is estimated that the campus could serve approximately twice the number of students
if scheduling practices gave greater attention to class occupancy levels and to available
hours during the week. (ed.) |
