Minutes of the Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics

January 25, 2000

 ü        Each committee member was issued a copy of the Orientation for Principal Committee Chairs by the Steering Committee.

      Irvin Clark discussed the role and responsibilities of the committee.

 ü       Coach Mike Wallace & Coach Rhonda Thompson were appointed as the committee secretaries to record the minutes.

 ü       Floor was opened by Irvin Clark to initiate committee discussion.   It was agreed that we reference the                               1990-accreditation   report to review previous recommendations concerning Intercollegiate Athletics at             SSU and determine what has or has not been accomplished.

 ü       The committee members concluded that no recommendations from the 1990 accreditation report were listed for                    intercollegiate athletics.

 ü       The committee agreed to discuss the SACS report from 1990.

 ü        The committee concluded that the Intramural Program now falls under the umbrella of Student Affairs and not Athletics          as was in the 1990 report.

 ü       Dr. Fitch suggested that we start with the Department of Athletics mission statement and pull recommendations from              the athletic mission statement.

 ü       The committee agrees to merge the University mission and Athletic mission statements together and come up with a set          of goals and objectives.

 ü       The Department of Athletics Policy & Procedures Manual is currently missing; Dr. Fitch will investigate further, he              will also check with Dr. Zow to see if he has it in his office.

 ü       We must obtain all pertinent information about athletics from the Department of Athletics Policy & Procedures                      Manual before initiating action plan.

 ü       Each committee member was issued a copy of the latest student-athlete handbook.

 ü       Morris Brown College recent SACS report on Intercollegiate Athletics will be referenced as a source to complete              SSU's SACS report on Intercollegiate Athletics.

 ü       The next SACS Committee meeting will be held on February 1, 2000 at 10:00 am in the Office of Residence Life.
